Coral reefs are the most commonly found in tropical waters, but on a smaller scale deep-sea corals and cold water also exist. In general, they are threatened by climate change, acidification of the oceans, over-exploitation of reef resources, and practices harmful land use. High content of nutrients in agricultural areas can also damage corals encouraging excessive algae.

Belize is fortunate to have these barrier reefs, and yet is capable of ensuring their conservation. With crystal clear Caribbean waters that literally could not see across the sea

East of the barrier reef are three distinct coral atolls – Turneffe and Glover in Mountains and lighthouse on a separate peak in the east. Deep sea trench that separates the two reefs. There is also a coral atoll in the room – the Banco Chinchorro, north in Mexican waters.

They fly south in Belize, we can see the reef as an unbroken chain of white surf along the Caribbean coast of the Peninsula Yucatan and continue south along the entire length of the country and Sapodilla Cayes Ranguana.

Inside the reef the water is shallow and with a bluish tint. Outside, the water is deep and shows the royal blue sky. The two shades of blue, the sea itself are clearly separated by a yellow line is narrow, as the stands of coral reefs.

Near populated island, the reef is a magnificent coral solid wall broken only by narrow channels called gullies. This is where the divers can be stored for hours, fascinated by the infinite variety, shapes and colors of tropical reefs.

However, this reef is more that Sideshow decorative. Without this island would not exist because it serves as a violation of natural water, protection against beach erosion, and the home of Caye and its inhabitants.

Reef Brief

Although the reef like a stone dead, is actually a living wall formed by millions reef organisms. In fact, corals are carnivorous animals called polyps, which feed on small marine animals that float, capturing tentacles.
